Solo School Visits

I offer highly-interactive writing workshops and assembly presentations. I love meeting kids in person but understand that schools sometimes need the flexibility of online visits. I offer both types. I am happy to adjust my presentations to fit your particular curricular needs. All my presentations are  aligned with Common Core and National Council of Social Studies standards.

"The kids were completely engaged (which for [4th grade] is truly saying something) and all of the adults in the room loved your presentation as well."

Writing Workshops

Grades 2-8

45-60 minutes

In writing workshops, I explore a principle of writing and guide students through writing exercises practicing the principle. I can tailor the workshop to your needs. Some workshops I have taught:
- Writing Powerful Introductory Hooks
- Showing, Not Telling
- Finding the Main Point
- Using Vivid Sensory Details
- Digging into Primary Sources (a social studies workshop where kids walk through the process of getting information from non-textual primary sources, like photographs)

Making a Book

Grades 1-6

45 minutes

A highly interactive presentation about the process of writing a nonfiction book. The presentation covers getting ideas, researching, writing, revising in conference (with friends, teachers, editors), and sharing good writing. The online format allows me to give kids an up-close look at props related to my process. Kids remain engaged throughout as they try experiments and answer questions. My goal is to provide vivid descriptions and mnemonics that teachers can call back to throughout the year as they guide kids through the writing process.

Telling Your Own Story

Grades K-2

30-40 minutes

Every kid has a personal and family story that matters. This feel-good presentation starts with a highly interactive puppet show based on a story by Pura Belpré and concludes with a reading from Pura’s Cuentos. Kids will leave knowing that the unique story of their lives matters!

Real or Pretend

Grades PreK-K

30 minutes

I explore the difference between fiction and nonfiction by examining my critically-acclaimed dinosaur series where the narrator uses a time machine to visit dinosaurs and learn natural history facts about them. We’ll share dinosaur facts, move around, and laugh in this highly interactive presentation.

School Visits with Friends

One of the advantages of virtual visits is that I can partner with friends who live in farflung places to give kids an even richer experience.

Everyone Matters

Grades K-8

45-60 minutes

Jennifer Keelan-Chaffins, the subject of the biography of All the Way to the Top, present together to kids. We help kids define “accessibility” and show what it means in Jennifer’s day-to-day life with a service dog and a motorized wheelchair. We do an interactive reading of All the Way to the Top, focusing on how kids can make a difference.

Write and Draw with Us

Grades 1-6

45 minutes

In this workshop, I partner with an illustrator to lead children through the process of writing and illustrating a personal narrative. Kids will, in the course of the workshop, write a paragraph with rich sensory detail and create a drawing that conveys emotion.

"The 2nd grade teachers are still raving about what a fabulous time it was."
