I love to talk with kids about writing, revising, historical research, and what it has to do with their lives. I’m happy to fine-tune my presentations to meet your curricular needs. My presentations are aligned with Common Core and National Council of Social Studies standards.
Grades K-8 A Writer’s Life
What does a writer do? Where do ideas come from? How is a book made? This presentation follows the process of writing from idea, through drafts and revision, and then through the publication process. This stresses the communities of writers that help professional writers. We close with a discussion of how students can build their own supportive writing communities. (45 minutes; suitable for groups of up to 100 students; also available as a Skype visit)
Grades Pre-K-8 Getting it Right: Revising Your Writing and Your Life
The audience works interactively to revise a familiar song into something even better, learning at the same time the steps of revision: identifying what works, identifying what doesn’t work, and trying new strategies. I show how I revised Mountain Chef and tell its publication story. We read about Tie Sing and talk about how he used the principles of revision to change his life, and we leave on an upbeat note, talking about how kids can use principles of revision to improve their own lives. (45 minutes; suitable for groups of up to 100 students)
Grades 3-8 Digging Into Primary Sources
What’s the difference between primary and secondary sources? How do historians use photographs, posters, and editorial cartoons? In this workshop I tell about the trail I followed to find primary sources in researching Mountain Chef. I teach the students the Library of Congress method of primary source analysis, and then we break into small groups and analyze actual primary sources.
